This is one of my three favorite scenes in the movie. The first is when Pete and Billy get their first talk together and we find that Pete is EXACT person Billy has been looking for: a guy with an economics degree who understands baseball stats AND team budgeting, which none of the scouts in this room are really considering. That's "the problem" Billy has been trying to explain that they refused to see. This scene is my second favorite, because the scouts aren't entirely wrong, but definitely weren't right: Jeremy's personality IS a liability, but Hatteberg and Justice WERE being overlooked for the age and disability bias that Pete called out to Billy and why they were being undervalued. But my favorite scene of all is at the end with the Red Sox, where we finally see real validation and wisdom in action. The humility not being shown in this scene is shown in spades at the end after Billy & Pete's methods put the A's in the history books with the win streak on budget only 1/3 of the Yankees. This scene isn't about recruiting players, it's about fighting a system of belief and showing how entrenched this 'philosophy' is and the central struggle of the film.
